Voters in the 55th Assembly District will get their first
chance to hear from all six candidates seeking the seat in
the state legislature during a candidates forum the morning
of Nov. 15. The event is being hosted by California State
University, Dominguez Hills and the Carson Chamber of
Commerce.
The 55th Assembly District seat became vacant in August when
then-representative Laura Richardson won her bid to
represent the 37th Congressional District in the U.S. House
of Representatives. A special
election is
scheduled for December 11, 2007.
Vying to
represent the cities of Carson, Torrance, Harbor City,
Wilmington, Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill in the
state Assembly are Los Angeles Community College Board of
Trustee Warren Furutani, management consultant Mervin Leon
Evans, Carson City Councilman Mike Gipson, Long Beach
businesswoman Evelyn D. Robertson, retired aerospace
engineer Herb Peters, and Long Beach resident and nurse
Charlotte Sadiyah Gibson.
During the
forum, the candidates will field questions from members of
the audience, who will be handed comment cards as they
arrive, on which to submit their questions. A continental
breakfast will be served at the forum and parking will be
free in Lot 3.

A pioneer in
open government reform, election integrity, and personal
privacy rights, former South Bay State Senator Debra Bowen
became only the sixth woman in California history elected to
a statewide constitutional office when she was elected as
Secretary of State in November 2006.

As the chief
elections officer, Secretary Bowen is responsible for
overseeing state and federal elections, a role that also
requires her to test and certify the voting equipment used
in California. |
